DVD-ROM Drive
Hey guys
Im looking for a DVD-ROM Drive because I went to install my pc game and it didnt load. I searched around and realised the CD Driver was for cds only. So if anyone can hook me up with a DVD driver to play pc games on post on here. I will consider all offers.
Cheers

P.S If you see a good auction on Trade Me post the link here so I can check it out

Weird.
A pc dvd drive reads/writes cd's and dvd's. So installing a cd game off the dvd drive is no problem, usually.
When you say "didn't load" is sounds like a game issue rather than the type of equipment used to install it. The game won't need cd drivers to read the cd - that's taken care by your device manager in Windows.
You can't however install a dvd game via a cd drive, as the cd drive doesn't know how to read the disk.
What was the game, error message, etc ? What does the manual say about it ?

Yeah I found that out when I went on the C&C Support Forums. Is it possible to get a external driver because with an internal driver I would have to go and get that installed into the pc which would be a bit costy. What would be the cheapest and most effective option?Prometheus wrote:

I found this but it doesnt make sence because on the cover it says CD ROM and in the text it says DVD ROM.

So the game is on dvd and you've only got a cd drive ?
Is that right ? If so, buy a new dvd drive and throw away the cd drive as it's worthless. All of this is assuming you have a computer more powerful than a 386.
The link you provided is for another cd drive only - it will not read dvd disks at all.

Average price to buy - $60
Average price to install in a shop - $30 ? (for 20 mins work max)
Average price to install by a friend ? $20 for doz Heinkein
Where do you live ? That would help recommending a shop to install if you need it. Brands, they're much the same, I just always stay away from the very cheapest pirce listed.

Oh.
Option 1 - pick up a dvd drive from your local Dick Smith shop. The advantage they have is you can get easily a full refund up to 7 days after purchase. Browse google on what to do, install yourself and learn a bit about computers. Unscrew back, unscrew sides of cd drive, unplug everything, plug those bits into dvd drive, rescrew and away yah go. Install drivers off installation cd that comes with it.
Option 2 - wander around Taupo land see if there's a small computer shop ? type thing. There's millions of them in Auckland, that would do the job while you wait, but that's not really much help aye Purchase there and get them to install it. LG are ok - bascially any brand would do the job, average price is $60.
option 3 - come to P Nth for the Easter Lan, talk to the kind folks at VRConcepts and get a drive off them, get some beers together and someone will install it.
option 4 - take the game back to where you purchased it from and see if they have a cd version instead.
Hope this helps.

No problem, there's a step by step guide here with pictures, so printing them out would probably be your best bet.
Or if you have access to another PC, take your machine and plonk it next to it, so you can easily reference what you see vs what you want to see.
If you go to Dick Smith - this one is $94. A bit pricey compared to other shops, but then they are in Taupo.
And of course, ask the friendly guys at VRConcepts !
