CODMW2 players - sound off
Need an indication of how many are going to get this game within the first week or two of its release... If we have enough interest it might be possible to have a our own server with the game settings we like. If we have 8 or more I'll see about organising some nights of scrimaging (with other clans) that doesn't interfer with racing.

Re: CODMW2 players - sound off
I wont be able to provide a server for at least 2 months after release, if at all.
Linux binaries are not supported (same as all CoD releases) and will be very late, some server admins are not expected them at all.

I'll be grabbing a copy, probably from CD-wow and I'm not sure if I can afford it straight away.. November is going to be an expensive month for me.

I'll be getting it Sas. If I ever get around to replacing the Motherboard on the spare system, I can run a server if you need one.

FPSadmin.com wrote:No dedicated servers at all.
Will use Steam and VAC
Will also use a new IW-NET to matchmake
You will need a video card to run a listening local server (not dedicated)
You will need a separate copy of the game for each server.

Re: CODMW2 players - sound off
theres already so many petitions going round due to this completely screwing over PC gamers especially the competitive side. Ive read on several other forums that this may be too late for the game people are already cancelling preorders.... estimates from amazon are already going around. This is setting up to officially be the worst COD EVER made.Riven wrote:Its a console port, it'll be rubbish on the PC
Heres one.
This is on the Infinity Ward site
I looked about 1 1/2 hours ago and it was 85 pages... its now 144!
EDIT: IW just deleted the thread.... nice way to say go away PC gamers (I put that politely)
BUT ITS OK ANOTHER POPS UP STRAIGHT AWAY... hahahaah EDIT: deleted again
One that isnt being deleted

EDIT:hasnt been up that long and its over 8000. about 10 mins it goes up around 300 and is getting quicker.
This is an outline on the details of what MW2 fail is.
MW2: Our game has changed forever

Black Saturday?
A day of infamy?
It's hard, very hard, for me to write objectively right now, but here is a summary of what we heard on BASH 123. If you missed it...we will have it on demand in a few minutes.
The raw version of BASH 123 can be found here. This is a long cast; however, I've edited down the salient bits with Rob Bowling here:
The Director's cut: BASH 123
Fourzerotwo was on our BASH webcast this morning and he had a few surprises for the PC community.
Here are the snippets:
*
We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.
*
There is no delay for the PC version of MW2
*
There's prestige mode
*
Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.
*
You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.
*
You have private matches where you can customize the game
*
You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.
*
This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.
*
Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match
*
You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.
*
Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS
I've summarized some of my own thoughts from the cast here:
General
* IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
* GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
* No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
* Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
* DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
* Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.
Clans:
* No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
* Listen servers will connect to each other.
* IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin
Competitive Gaming
* Competitive gaming has changed forever.
* It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.
Modding
* Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
* Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.
Today our game has changed for ever.
I'll leave this post with Josh Peckler's comments from planetmedalofhonor.com:
The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us.
IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history.

Luckily my experience with CoD4 only relied on dedicated servers on a very rare basis so the affect on me personally will be minimal, but not have dedicated servers is hella strange, I would love to be a fly on the wall when that idea/decision was raised/reached at meetings
Edit
While im not a 7 y/o school boy, my technical knowlage on servers and how they affect gameplay is somewhat limited at best, so it may affect me hugely

IW wont change it of course, but they have seriously pissed off a whole lot of pc gamers
Quote from EA
Battlefield was born on the PC, it grew up with dedicated servers and even when it left the nest and became multiplatform it remembers it's roots. We're doing the PC version of BC2 right. We won't stomach a console port tossed off to some "lesser" studio like our competitors chose to do. We've got our top PC devs working on the PC version side by side with the console team. We don't do ports. It's not the game we'd want to play, and we know it's not the game you want to play either.
They obviously see a situation ready to take advantage of, re-release of BF1942 anyone

I was always annoyed BC1 was never released on PC, as I don't have any consoles and BC1 looked great ... Cant wait for BC2

Re: CODMW2 players - sound off
from little bits I have read it seems they are virtually admitting they stuffed up and may be looking to impliment dedicated servers somewhere... most likely a gigantic patch soon after the release... sigh

Re: CODMW2 players - sound off
A wee bit more info on how the new system will work here
A wee extract that interests me is this one :
"However, say you’re in a clan and you want to play a Clan match with another team, or you want to practice for an upcoming tournament that has specific rules in a private game. Then you can start a Private Match (which is essentially like running your own private server) where you have complete control over the rules, who can join, boot players you don’t want, and essentially control the entire game or tweak it to your liking. Once the rules are set, you can invite the other team in or just start it up with your clan to practice with the custom rules before the match"
Also:
"You can utilize the friendslist to see when your friends are online, and invite them to your Party. A Party allows you to move from game to game as a group. It’s great for clan matches, because you can party of with your clan and move from public game to public game together. Or if you’re doing a scrim, party up and invite the other clan (who is in a party) and they’ll all join at once"
Will obviously have to see how it all works in the real world, I haven't canned by pre-order so I know exactly what I'm looking at first when I get it installed
