I'd love to go, but it's a bit of a trek from Christchurch. Do however plan on a trip north to Hampton Downs at some stage.

Re: Hampton Downs NZ Festival of Motor Racing
I'll be there this weekend, have a slight preference over next weekend as the late 50s - early 60s Formula Juniors are running this weekend but not next. What day depends on the weather forecast, will p.m. you G if it's Sunday, perhaps we can meet and we can talk about my glory days in sim racing when I finished ahead of the Monsters (well, except for Danman who doesn't fall off the track like the others ... ;-)
Rifty - it's an excellent spectator track, IMHO much better than Puke + Taupo + Teretonga which are the only other I have been to, as the elevation changes allow for good viewing spots.

Re: Hampton Downs NZ Festival of Motor Racing
I'm tempted.. Post up if there are a bunch of you heading there this Sunday
I went to the first festival, 40 F5000s doing a rolling start is something to behold
Long range forecast is looking pretty good at the moment.
I've also got a spare ticket to the Toyotas at Hampton downs on 4/5th of Feb if anyone wants it.

Would love to check out the new track, have been to a couple of the other tracks up north (Puke and Manfield) but would love to cross HD off at some point ... maybe could organise a bit of a KSR meet up one meeting/year

It was good to catch up with Vandem and Bold. Pity Danman didn't make it.
The day started wet but turned into a fine afternoon.
(And no...thats not my camera work!)

I need a few months warning so I can arrange cover, always next time
Is this an annual thing? or a one off event?

Re: Hampton Downs NZ Festival of Motor Racing
Enjoyed the day, was good to meet Bold and Growler. Clever of G to bring along the missus so he had someone to hold the umbrella, but a little disappointing that she didn't jump up and get hot dogs and chips after we gave her a reasonably clear hint that the boys were hungry.
Seemed to be less US and European visitors than the previous two years. Highlight for me was a strong contingent of Trans-Ams in the pre-78 saloon + GT + muscle car class (including 6 Aussies, their website here: http://www.transamracing.com.au), mostly Mustangs + Camaros. Their 1st race was wet, allowing Howard Wood's quick BMW 2002 Tii to come from around p6 on the grid to win, but there was a dry line by the 2nd race and the V8s dominated. The remainder of the field was full of cars from the rF Historx mod, Capri RS, 911 (Rasmo's dad?), several Escorts, BMW 2002s, Mini.
Also a good field of in the 1980s-90s Group A and touring car class, including an ex-Jim Richards JPS BMW 635CSL which Jim was driving this weekend.
Some interesting cars in the paddock which didn't race, including the ex-Fahey Anglia fastback, which I hadn't seen before. (http://www.nzfmr.co.nz/pub/Golden%20Saloons.pdf, http://www.flickr.com/photos/8021817@N07/5511633926/)
Official pictures of the event will be up next week: http://groundsky.co.nz/

That's because you wandered off too early, she did go hunting for hot dog and chips Unfortunately the closest two food stands only had paninis and sandwiches..vandem wrote:Enjoyed the day, was good to meet Bold and Growler. Some in-car footage, Gary Wilkinson's 1977 Zakspeed Escort Mk II (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Zakspeed- ... 0859276168) mixing it with various (mostly BMW) Group A and touring cars ...
(Hope someone releases a rF version of the track one day ... )
and the full field of the Group A cars:
