GPL league

Post by famin » Thu Jan 12, 2006 10:59 am

OK its time to start some organising re GPL.
Riven has offered a server and suggested Thursday evenings.

As its his server I think its only couteous to give him the major say in the day.

However, other than that Im happy to 'organise' the rest.
Like tracks, points and drivers.

So for a start lets have some names. Who would be keen and available for a hardcore league using the 69mod on a Thursday evening.

Id really prefer drivers who will commit to this and have some feeling for the era. I would like, if possible, to include a good smattering of AI drivers too (possible riven?).

If we can get 6 or so drivers then Ill suggest some tracks. Starting easy and then getting into more unusual harder challenges. However one of the pre-requisites will be for extremely well done tracks. tracks that get great reviews in the GPL database.

Soooo, whos up for some oldskool racing?

so far we have:

famin
Marty
Growler
garethRobinson
diseased
chequers
danman
vandem
cap'n
Monza/Bold
Viking

possibles are Riven, X20, Murphy and Gordy

a good solid sensible crew I think.

Count me in and make sure Spa is one of the tracks!!!
I'm very keen for a GT Legends league as well. I suggest Tuesday evenings in place of what was GTR.

If i'm still hosting at the time you get a league started, then it can start any time after 7pm, but i'll not be able to race unless it starts at 8pm.

I dont mind missing practise, or getting there with only 5-10mins left and an actual RACE start at say 8:15.

Also note that i'm not fussed if I am racing or not in gpl69

thanks riven.
I suspect it would start later than 8:15 anyway, probably at least 8:30.

Can you confirm wehther AI cars can be included please?

I hadnt intended it to be tonight Marty!!

more like starting next week after I get the drivers and tracks all organised and published.

However if the server can be there for a practice run I'd appreciate it for one. Perhaps Riven can confirm if it will be up? If not maybe X20 will do one again...?

I would be keen too, if it can be done without the original needed.
It was before my online siming so manged to miss all the fun people used to have with it. I dont have a copy, and never found one when I was looking a while back.

If it can be run with only the 2004 demo, addon tracks, and mods I should be sweet, as long as me 'puter likes it.

I've got problems running GPL69 i.e. I can't load setups and I haven't checked if I can install new tracks yet, but I'm keen.
Just love the feel of those '69 cars - bring it on :D

I'd also be keen. I haven't raced since mid last year, but before this I did about a year with OzRaces using GPL 65, and can suggest some tracks that were good for racing (Lime Rock, Sandown, Dijon, Falkenberg etc). We could avoid originals to asssist those who don't have the original GPL CD.

I've installed 69 mod but only driven it for 10 mins. Can someone suggest a place to find good setups?

well now you ARE Monza...

Its just a list of everyone who has posted they are interested.

btw as organiser I'd like to be despotic here and say up front that, because of the open wheel nature of the sim and the inbuilt GPL lag that means youre closer than you think you are, any crashes caused by comings together into corners will be deemed to be the fault of the passing driver. This is given both cars are under control of course.
Yes I know that means that the leading driver can chop the one attempting the pass. Correct!
what im aiming for here is a simple draconian rule to make people exercise patience and only pass when its really on. Like a drag race down a straight etc. In effect its famins 'hold your line rule'.
Im trying to eliminate the lunge down the inside at the last minute. It will just cause mayhem and Im sure all the drivers who have signed up dontwant that.
5 laps of close fair patient racing is waaay better than driving right up someones tailpipe, ducking and diving and an impatient lunge causing a massive crash.

Keep back a bit and wait for the mistake.

and yes, it definitely applies to me too.

Thats really the main rule.

to back up this rule I can do no better than copy the ozraces guide on corner rights. I endorse this 100% and have gone further, in effect saying you better be mostly PAST the other car before the corner.

If you watch the odd few GPL drivers in action you might think the rule for corner rights goes something like, " Whatever piece of ground I can barge my way into I have the right to ". Well, ... not so. There is actually an etiquette for corner rights. Its not just for GPL, or racing sims, but is basically the same for every level of real-world motor racing - from Formula Ford to Formula 1 and everything in between. " What ! ", you say. " You mean I don't have the right to throw my car into any gap I see ? ". Actually no, you don't - and if you raced in any real-world competition the way you may race in GPL, instead of being hailed as a motor racing genius you may find yourself banned from even the lowest levels of the sport. Some of the everyday things you see in GPL simply aren't tolerated where real cars are damaged, real money is the cost of repair, and real lives are at risk.

In brief, the concept is, you must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before a corner's turn-in point to have the right for room to be left for you by the ahead driver. Substantial overlap means at least that the front of your car is up to say the driver's position in the ahead car - and that's at the very least. You probably should have more in many circumstances. The ahead driver has ever right to be fully committed to the racing line of his choice without any interference if there was no overlap before he turned in.

If sufficient overlap is established before the turn-in point, then the behind driver has the right to room. The ahead driver can still battle for the place of course but must do so from a wider-out position, leaving room for the behind driver.
