GPL Race #1 South African GP

Post by famin » Thu Jan 26, 2006 7:27 am

To all those signed up for this series.

Practice start time to be advised. Expected around 7 - 7:30pm
Race start is normally 15 minutes after a track restart. I am trying to get the race started on time at 8:30pm.

Race length will be as for Novice setting. ie 20 laps

Track record on my PC is 1:20.7 from 67 cars by cronik. I expect this to be demolished.

Please note that 69 cars need approximately 30 - 40% more fuel than the sim states to make the end of the race. If however you DO run out you can Shift - R but an attempt should be made to make it to the pits to do this. (you have a fuel gauge and can feel stuttering at least half a track away from the pits!

I recommend installing Pribluda to enhance your enjoyment of the racing, and the downloading and installing of the track graphic updates from our website links.

No lunging or tailgating will be tolerated during the race. I want a safe clean race with the absolute minimum of crashes between drivers.

The onus is ENTIRELY on the passing driver to make a clean pass! Any incidents will be reviewed afterwards by the clerk of the course (myself) and judgement passed accordingly and fairly as I see it.

There WILL be about 8 or 9 AI drivers attending. Please be aware they drive differently to the real drivers and adapt. There are places they will slow dramatically. Dont punt Denny off! Rindt is OK :D (kidding)

IP address will be given out later in the day/evening.

I hope you take my rules in the spirit they are given. Im trying to enforce clean sensible driving towards a great racing experience for us.

Now get in some practice and the gods of servers willing we'll see you on track this evening. I cant wait.

awesome racing... wonderful stuff...

I have to thank Riven for resetting the server for us. It was a late start but some practice in canada on diseased's server helped a lot (isnt the net wonderful?)

I had to shift-R twice (blown engine and chris amon and I had a tangle and I ended up upside down but otherwise a nice clean race dicing with Growler, Brabham, rindt and Stewart...

X20 is still shaking after being chased down by the cap'n and I think there might be a bit of a write up from him.

Two retirements (marty and gregory (a late fill in) but everyone else saw it out and the post race ventrilo seemed to judge it a success... Roll on Jarama.

and by the way this is the Pribluda link: http://rugpl.simulators.ru/cgi-bin/view ... 4418210503

you need that to enable knowing who is around you, just like nascar.

the picture shows T3 on lap 1.
the order is Rindt, Amon, McLaren, Marty, famin and X20 trailing from a 15th place random start.

Thanks all. That was my 1st on-line race for about 6 months, only the 3rd time I have got out the wheel this year. Got cramp in my toes ! Thanks to those who were patient when lapping me. Sorry to the Matra driver I cut in on at T1 on 1st lap, I has assumed that I was the last car after my off. Better get pribluda installed ;-)

But I enjoyed it, I had forgotten how much fun "racing" historic cars could be. See you next Thurs, next time I'll get in some practice.

fyi more GPL 69 at Rouen in 10 mins, using IGOR, channel #OZRACES. Ozraces.org.

As famin said I'm still sitting here in utter disbelief that I won. Having been dumped well back in 15th in the randomised start I played it real safe at the start and picked my way through the incidents and rather surprisingly found myself 4th behind three AI drivers. Picking them off one by one I found myself in the lead with nigh on 30 seconds over the next real driver.

So I settle in, drive clean and try not to fall off... which I did for umpteen laps driving fast and clean, picking off back markers. Then this McGreen character started showing up fleetingly in Pribluda... 28s, 24s... closing in all the time. I started pushing a wee bit harder and worked to make clean passes to keep cars between me and him hoping he makes the first mistake.

20 laps is a hell of a long time in GPL and the heart is hammering like no other race sim with the utter relentless concentration required... reeling off clean laps safely avoiding the backmarkers (thanks!) I'm down to my last lap with about 8s over McGreen. Ok just one more clean lap - pressure mounting - I can do it. Damn this is utterly intense stuff!

And promptly fell off in a sweeper half way round the track - and as expected it happened in slow motion as well. "NoooooOOOOoooo!" You know where you realise you've gone in a hint too deep, just a tiny bit, and you're terrified to snatch the brakes in case you make the situation even worse. Worse still I was falling off at one of those places where it almost always takes time recovering... Two rotations later, with the split time to McGreen ticking down frighteningly I'm point in the right direction, easing back onto track ever so gently, finally back on the track and accellerating once more into a slow left. Ok - still in front just - now if I can only drive these last four corners clean I'm home with a mere two seconds in the pocket!

Thankfully with way too hot rear tyres and my heart in my mouth I crossed the line a mere 1.4 seconds in front. YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!

McGreen's pressure was relentless and his pace very very very quick posting a fastest lap time at least half a second faster than my own. Hey we're part timer racers over here mate! Cheers for making that a hugely memorable racing experice man. Big /S.

I don't think I've ever driven 20, well 19.5 really clean laps at really good race speed in traffic in GPL before. Ever. Not ever. Then given how much I've been working and just how tired I am I'm simply staggered I went the distance. Incredible. Thrilling. And totally utterly stressful all rolled into one.

Coupled with excellent fair driving from everyone - and a circuit as fine as Kyalami - this was one race I sure won't forget in a hurry.

Pics tomorrow.

I can't get online with GPL - I think its still looking for my old modem.
The only connection option I get is serial port (I used to have an external modem), and I can't input an address anywhere.
Iroc won't connect, but I have got vroc working.

Any ideas?

Bring on next week.

Tried that.
When I try to connect via Gem I don't have the TC/IP option available, but when I tried with vroc it was there and joined no problem. It must be Gem stuffing it up.
