Good on ya for doing the updates. How did you score those races?

2 or 3 races? I had a win and 2 seconds. cap'n finished 2nd or further back in the first and then had two wins.

I just did the first two races as I figured the third one was just for fun (at least I treated it that way on the night).

So how come capn got more points than me?

I got a 1 and 2. He got a <=2 and a 1.

Or at least that's how I remembered it.

It was done by aggregating times.

wait one caller, I will double check the results...

aha, the maths says it all..

race 1 race 2
McGreen 11m19.221s 10m23.404s 679.221 623.404 1302.625
X20 10m58.595s 10m49.237s 658.595 649.237 1307.832

race 1 you beat McGreen by some 20.6 secs
but race 2 he beat you by 25.8 secs
Therefore overall he beat you by 5 secs.

Yes I know that this was because of you both being separately held up by the evil biplane. I did it (the scoring that is) coz I remember that sort of scoring being done in RL races. I didnt consider the implications but just treated it as one long race.
yes i shouldve posted that was the way in rules but didnt think it would ever be needed. apologies.

Hey, youre still winning. :)

Seems a bit weird actually. But if that's the method they used to use in F1, then fine.

Yeah it was the method they used when they accidently waved the flag after 7 laps instead of 28, and then decided to have a random grid on the next race and then used aggregated times...?!

Grumble, mumble, grrr, ah well bugger it. Just I'd heard all this talk about half points in each race.

I have to agree with that Agent X20.
Anywhere that requires you to drive for more than quarter of an hour to record a single time is a bit unusual to say the least.

However, it is an incredibly satisfying place once you stop swearing!!

Don't get me wrong it's an amazing place to drive. But with numbers now as low as they are, making people try to learn a track like this that's 10 minutes a lap is only going to drive more people away.

Part-time drivers like myself can learn a normal sized race track and hope to compete but that's just impossible here against anyone who's driven 50+ laps round the ring.

well due to an RFP requirement I suspect Ill get no real practice either so you can race me down the field X20.. :>

but seriously. The series is what it is.. Im not apologising. I wanted a dedicated band to stick out a proper season simulation and so far its been great! I thank everyone who has managed to keep on running. even if theres only 2 left Ill still enjoy it.

Ive had Riven change the laps to 4 for the nurb so join in and see if you can get a PB. Maybe youll get 4th like all the rest of the kiwis.

Thoughts on race tracks to use for GPL championship

Post by PinotNoir » Wed Mar 22, 2006 1:00 pm

I think both of you (X20 and Famin) are right, but in different ways.

Famin set up the season to simulate a real year, and its been good
fun, and worked well.

I even like THE RULE, despite the fact that I am the one that has
been most severely clobbered by it!!

We should finish what we started for this series. It would be nice to
see the end result, and I think Famin deserves that for all his work.

However, I think Agent X20's point about people being put off by
some tracks is extremely valid, and for next time we should
consider choosing a series of tracks that are all great
to drive, and promote good racing.
The intent of the next series shouldn't be to mimic a real season, but
to encourage a regular core of drivers each week. To build the
racing base if you like. (We can always do another real season after
we have that base built up.)

As an example of what I mean, Spa wouldn't be on my preferred list
for that series. It is a great circuit, but it doesn't produce good
racing when you've got small grids. This season's race was boring as
hell from a spectator's point of view.

Rouen on the other hand I would keep because it is a great challenge,
not too long, and provides excellent racing.

Off the top of my head, a good list of tracks to include would be:

Rouen (from original game)
Zandvoort (from original game)
Watkins Glen (from original game)
Kyalami (from original game)
Solitude (fantastic circuit and not too long)
Dundrod (looks awsome, and not too long)
Clermont Ferrand (fantastic place, but hard to pass)
Laguna Seca (I haven't done this in GPL - is the conversion okay?)
Mosport (from original game)
Panorama (if it is okay in 69 cars - 67 cars were too hard for most folks)
Jarama (I though this was a fantastic track for racing GPL cars.)

That's eleven tracks that everyone can learn quickly, have great
fun driving, and really encourage people to take part.)

There are other potentially great tracks, but I haven't tried them yet.
Brno
Bermgarten
Road Atlanta
Brooklands
Donnington
Syracuse
Dijon
Elkhart
Falkenburg

Specifically I would leave out:

Spa (great challenge, but too long and the racing is boring)
Nurburgring (I love the place, but it is too long for most people)
Monaco (like why even bother? It is frustrating as hell and you can't pass.)
Mexico (It's just a revolting track, in every way.)
Isle of Man (I'd love to do it, but again it is too long for most.)
All modern "road" circuits - like Adelaide, Detroit etc
All "point and squirt" circuits.

Just in case anyone's lacking a setup, here's one for the Matra. I can't tell you how fast it is due to my spinning on most laps, and I'm sure an alien driver would sneer at it, but when I'm in the groove it feels really good and it's what I'll be using tomorrow. Wings 15-5.

As a matter of interest

Post by PinotNoir » Wed Mar 22, 2006 1:17 pm

hi Cap'n,

As a matter of interest, why the focus on the Matra?

I noticed that at Brands we might almost have called it Formula Matra!

I think I raced the 49b at Jarama and the Ferrari at Monaco. But generally due to limited practise time, I use a car I'm familiar with and adapt a good setup from another track (adjusting gears/camber etc). It just happens to be the Matra.

Having said that I intend to get back into the one of the other cars for rest of the season - I was not unaware of the Matra-thon last week ;)

Personally, I'd love a good race at the ring :D I've done enough laps there to usually know what comes after what and think all you lot should try it more often. It certainly rates as one of the best tracks ever in my book and I thrash around it in every game I can.

I would just about be keen to race with you lot, but I cant be arsed with installing gpl from scratch plus the 69 mod at the moment..

Oh and you definately can't leave spa out of a series, I rate the 67 version of that very slightly below the ring :D

I can drop you a CD backup of my GPL directory Bold (or anyone for that matter). All you need to do then is simply install the orginal GPL off your original disk (or the demo), then copy over my files from the CD. Its all up to date with all the tracks and all the updates. Then make sure you 'UN read only' and youre good to go.

and even quite a few setups.

If anyone wants to avail themselves just PM me.

I agree with your assessment of Spa and Nurburgring.

However, you sound like someone with lots of spare time and already know the circuits well.
That suggested list was to attract and retain drivers who have very little spare time for GPL, but enjoy a good race when they can.

The Nurburgring simply takes too long for such people, regardless of the fact that it is FANTASTIC(!!!).

Spa is a great circuit too, but the race was more like a giant test session last time because the field spread out so much. In other words the online race didn't give the particpants anything they couldn't get playing the AI cars at home. (Expect for an almighty great crash at Eau Rouge on lap one where Famin had I think the biggest and longest prang I have EVER seen in GPL.)

If you want a list of tracks that are quick to learn, and give good races with small grids, then Spa and the Nurburgring both have issues to deal with.

Once you get a larger core of drivers, THEN bring those tracks back for the folks like you and me who want them.
Or have them as optional races held some time other than the regular night.
