A1GP Taupo pix
So folks, post in here A1GP pix
Of all the spots, in all of Taupo, I just had to bump into Bazz, Happy, Bold and Jetboy within 30 seconds although standing there in the shade was very nice. Apols Jetboy for not calling on the last night, too buggered so a quick curry then bed time.
Anyhoo, here's some pix.
Did some wandering around on Thursday and we figured the 3 logo wasn't big enough ! But Team NZ were still keeping a close eye on us wandering in and out of their pit bay just incase anything fell into pockets. Oh and that's my son Nicholas who was down helping me out for the weekend.
Nice 'n shiny cars before they hit the track. I did pity the poor guy whose job it was to polish everything, including washing all the carbon fibre body work and scrub the wheels.
V8 Utes did a bit of bash and dash too. Only now do I discover I took no photos of any of the muscle cars
All parked up and ready to go, they were used for the drivers parade lap. Very shiny and very expensive. Suprisingly not all the Ferrari owners were dickheads, or tanned guys with shirts open to their belly with a 16 year old hanging off their arm (only some matched this description).
Nicely parked in a very dusty paddock...
... with very lax security why anyone could have just walked up and attempted to hot wire (well for about 2 seconds).
Getting ready for the sprint race. Everyone had high expectations....
...which didn't last long when you hit the rear tyre of another car.
One puncture repair later and NZL scream out of the pits.
Despite having loads of practise, it was interesting to watch the pit crew fumble and stumble their way for changing tyres. It's never as easy as it looks.
Our view and yes having to do some work as well.
And just like that, the feature race was over. In a short space of time, the also rans were packing everything up and getting out, while the winners were drinking it up large with sponsors and guests.
And fark it was hot !

Re: A1GP Taupo pix
Might have to make the trip next year as the TV coverage was terrible quality.
Was that due to compression Prom or does TV3 need some new cameras.
I watched delayed coverage A1GP last season on TV3 at brands hatch I think? Or may have even been an earlier race? But the quality was amazing! Best HD racing coverage I've seen so far.

Re: A1GP Taupo pix
Here's a few that I took.
The main part; the bar:
As part of the lunchtime shows, they had Sky Divers:
and a dragster there with 2000hp and it went from 0 to 100 very very fast
The Red Chequers did their display of flying skills, and also came in and landed on the race track and let rip of some smoke for us all to see.
Team India's Garage
The safety car and medical car
Start of the feature race.
Luckily it clouded over so we didn't have to burn to a cinder out in the sun (It was fecking hot, 28 deg +)

Re: A1GP Taupo pix
The coverage was done by A1GP in HD and we just sit on the end of it, scaled down to SD - so all the direction, graphics, etc come from A1GP Production, who sit in Portacoms with massive air conditioning unit pumping in cool air all day long. The transmission part of it as I understand wasn't in HD, as Shaun and Jonny were shot in standard def.Heppy wrote:Might have to make the trip next year as the TV coverage was terrible quality.

The next round however may be different

I noticed the compression looked naff too. Definitely not up to usual TV3 quality...be it SD or HD.Prometheus wrote:The coverage was done by A1GP in HD and we just sit on the end of it, scaled down to SD - so all the direction, graphics, etc come from A1GP Production, who sit in Portacoms with massive air conditioning unit pumping in cool air all day long. Re: A1GP Taupo pix
The story I heard was that with the new Ferrari engines, Jonny would be kinda re-learning driving style anyway, so from a team perspective they thought there wasn't much to lose putting in van der Drift instead. Yeah Right
On Monday Jonny took the car out for a spin and was getting race pace times, quicker than van der Drift was achieving too
So it looks like Jonny has sealed his drive for South Africa.

Re: A1GP Taupo pix
Yer I thought that reason was a bit bollocks too, surely more experience on the track and in the car in general outweighs driving more recently with a more powerful engine ^_^

Re: A1GP Taupo pix
fun weekend
http://picasaweb.google.com/AW11Ggav/A1GPTaupoJan2009#
Didn't actually see a great deal of the racing, spent sat walking around pits and paddock except for when the A1 cars were on track.
Managed tp get most of the NZ teams signatures on a cap as well as Brendon Hartley & Bob Mcmurray, was waiting out the back of pits after qual harrasing people as they got close then when i got Bob's attention he suggested i just walk straight in! so i did
Chris got hustled away to post qual briefing before i could get a signature but i managed to get in, he says ' ah good glad you managed to catch up '

The true irony is that when I typed that post I originally called you guys Bappy, as I can never tell you apart. But edited it upon reflection.BAZZIL wrote:isn't that hippy? lol
Nice pix guys
The studio is in the middle of the right hand side top row of boxes, while this race was happening we were recording links, so there's no-one on the balcony.
And I'd forgotten about the sunsets too, stunning ones over the weekend.

I think the reason would be something along the lines of the sponsorship that van der Drift as bought to the team, everthing comes down to money.
No, he didnt slam into you, he didnt bump you, he didnt nudge you, he rubbed you, and rubbing son, is racing.
