4age vs v6

Post by Corrin24g » Mon Aug 09, 2010 6:22 pm

Bull say that a standard manual 4 cylinder 4age fuel injected engine would be better towing than a commodore 3.8l v6 engine
wtf???

opinions please (:

For towing the more torque the better, simple as that.

If it so happens that one of the many variations of the 4age engine has more torque than a particular 6 cylinder motor your looking at then the 4age will be better.

I agree.

Ive driven one of the commodores hes looking at and they are gutless wonders.

I mightve over exaggerated when I said his 4AGE would be better, but in reality, it wouldn't be far off it :larf:

I know my Sprinter with a 4AGE towed far better then my mates commodore did.

just because you have driven one version is not how to judge them overall...

I use to do some work on a large fleet of commodores right up to the latest models and all were different in power, handling and smoothness even if they were the same year and done similar km...
it also depends on what you are towing and how it is loaded as well... so many variables to throw in there...

I swear by the 4age, i had a silver top 20 valave and it was FAST, however i think to tow with it youd have to be pretty high in the rev range to be effective.
If a commode-ore is having trouble towing theres possibly something wrong with it as cubes is always better and a v6 should always have more tourqe over a 4age

Toyota 4age silver top 20 valve: 162nm @5200rpm
Ecotec v6 commodore (not supercharged): 304nm @3600rpm

Thats presuming Corrin is getting one of the later model commodores.

If you seen the one he linked me to you will know why I told him not to get it :larf:

A 4AGE would outlast a V6 Buick any day of the week. Theres a reason why Corollas go round the clock and still keep going like new.

and the clock usually only go to 100,000km...

many older dunnydoors do 400 -500,000km with minimal maintance and are still going strong.... oh and there clocks tick over at 1,000,000km not the 100,000 so you know the actual km they have done...

all car models have there good and bad cars some are lemons and some are great cars.... suppose it depends on the day they were made

im no holden man but our 94 commy tows our stockcar to wellington from pram with no hassle and is allways over taking other tow cars, and towing wise, its way better than our 05 rodeo,(4x2, 96kw) but if ya want the best, imo is the ford ranger, we have used one to tow(4x4, 115kw, to welly, to palmy and to wHanganui this year and its the speed has never droped under 9o going up hills. and hums along nicley at 110kms, allways got the power when overtaking other people towing, lol
Thats my opinion,
Sam

Get a super Safari, TD42 turbo manual. We carry up to 5tonnes when traveling away to teams events only running her at 14psi (was said to run at 22psi with no problems) _b .

Corrolla's go to 1,000,000km Nigel don't be silly. We aren't talking about the very first Corolla's :larf: .

Towing mate.

The particular car he linked me to was an old Commodore wagon with a carburettored, automatic v6 in it rated at 160hp from new.... Hardly any more then a 4age. Sure it will have a bit more torque, but considering his celica is probably half the weight ...

Don't knock anything until you try it badass. I can tell you now that almost most fords if not all I would recommend not to tow ... and I work for a ford dealership!

I well tuned, modern V6 would mop the floor in towing for sure, but then a 4AGE is a good 30 year old engine as well so you could say a modern 3SGE would tow just as well ...
