Re: sudden problems - please help ASAP
I kept getting this thing pop-up every 6 or so secs making it very hard to keep any patient.
Also when opening anything to do with explorer like My documents my Computer etc it was only there for 3 or so secs then it would disappear and be gone .

for those that cant find AVG 8 free version, here is a link that I found by typing AVG 8 Free into google http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
not that hard really.

do you have to start in safe mode?
try starting in safe mode with command line. navigate to your usb drive and execute explorer.

Well it seems pretty clear that they didn't do the job.Harding Jr wrote:I'm running AVG 7.0 I think it is and spybot - search and dstroy.Prometheus wrote:Your next step before the weekend is to get an effective anti-virus up and running.
What were you running before ? Because it clearly didn't work aye....
And they where up to date when I last done a update on them on Saturday
Consider this - how pissed off are you because your computer isn't working ? How much time have you sunk into it fixing ? Spread over 12 months, the cost for paying for Av stuff really can be cost effective.
And of course everyone has personal opinions on AV stuff, some folks love, some folks hate - as long as you can accept there is no perfect AV software out there, you'll do ok.
Personally I use NOD32 on all of my computers. I've currently got 4 licenses and have never had a virus on any of the pc's - and that includes sites the kids visit/MSN/downloading and installing game demos and the like. mind you, the kids are forbidden from accepting files via MSN, and to their credit, they don't.
Now I'm not saying "go and buy this and your life will be complete" but, for the minimal $$ cost, I have peace of mind, and for the cost of a cup of coffee on a regular basis, I can use my pc - which (without gloating) is more than you're currently experiencing.
I've been running pc's since the days of the dinosaur and I've never, ever had a virus. Maybe I don't run stuff willy nilly from files that get sent to me, maybe I'm not visiting the same goat porn sites but think really hard what have you done to your pc in the last month, where have you gone and what have you chosen to do.

PC-Cillin is what I use, It has never failed me :P and I know plenty of others that use it, it's not too expensive, and you can install it three times (on different computers if required).

Re: sudden problems - please help ASAP
The explorer exploit is not a virus and pretty much no virus checker will pick it up because it runs instead of the real explorer.exe shell so your virus checker doesn't even know theres a problem.
There are lots of variants and are usually installed by opening a zip file or running a downloaded program or in rare cases can be directly installed by visiting a malicious website.
You may be lucky and be able to copy a new clean explorer.exe to your C:\Windows folder but usually the hijacked one will fire up again on the next reboot. There are ways to clean it up but its a pretty long and technical process (usually involving a lot of swearing and threats of hammers and axes)...
IMO I would back up what stuff you want to save and do a clean install of windows. IE format the thing and install windows again...
THEN: once you are running... go to this page on the net and download this file...
You will never have this problem again... ever!!! until the next time I mean

Re: sudden problems - please help ASAP
you could plug your hard drive in to another computer and manually copy the explorer exe over. (make sure the computer you plug it in to tho has all the anti virus stuff up to date

after doing a scan with malware bytes. it will tell you the filepaths of the .dll files.
You can delete these with Unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Do that again and look for a line with that dll in it... tick the box next to it and click the fix selected button.
the error at start up should be gone...
