sudden problems - please help ASAP

Post by Harding Jr » Tue Jun 17, 2008 10:28 pm

I was browsing around before on the net doing some homework and stuff then pc was a tad slow went t restart it did so then it loaded back up and then flashed all my icons and start bar like it was taking its time to load then my start button icon's etc didn't come back.

I thought it might have gone crazy so i turned it off started it up again and same thing the arrow just sat there in the middle of the screen like it had completely loaded just an arrow, everything was normal apart from all I could see was my background and nothing else apart from the arrow.

I thought it might be just taking its time so I went outside to the shed for 30mins or so came back and its still sitting there (yup screen saver worked fine).

To get onto here I used the ctrl+alt+delete to bring up task manager and launch firefox and I am hoping somebody see's this Asap and can help me.

At the bottom of this window usually where the start button lays there is nothing but my background 8o

Sounds like a virus, so you could use your firefox that you can start up to find a tool to d/l and run.
Something else you can try doing, similar to the way you started firefox probably is when you get in to windows is ctrl+alt+delete, then click File -> New Task and enter explorer
which should start explorer if windows isn't starting it properly.

Other than that you could try starting in to safe mode (spam the F8 key a bit when your computer starts up and you should get a start in safe mode option come up) Choose safe mode with networking if possible, if it goes in to windows alright, then you can probably go from there - just ask google :)

BTW, what operating system r u running?

I tried running explorer it just came up with the hour glass for a few secs then went away again, so I 'think' that mean it is running properly?

Had the same problem on a clients PC.
Explorer.exe had become infected.
so when AVG moved it to the virus vault, not much happened after that.

The way I fixed it was to get explorer.exe off another computer. put it twice on my usb flash drive
Start in safe mode.
start cmd
navigate to my external usb and run explorer.exe, bought up desktop all good. then find the other explorer.exe and paste it where the old one was.
(maybe long winded, but it worked, and no reinstall was needed, and the client was a happy chappy.
Then did a couple of virus scans, found 17 of the buggers :larf:

Sweet man will try this when I get home.

I have got access to my Mum's laptop which is running on vista and on the desktop pc (one with the problem) its on XP, will there be different versions of the explorer? will I have to find a different computer one with XP?

Also where do I find the files? I don't think you can copy it straight out of the task manger lol :)

Cheers Harding

Well I would click remove virus if my AntiVirus came up saying that - unless the infected file was important.

You mean the extremely obvious pop up while on the internet that installs spyware and viruses when you are silly enough to click anywhere on them?

explorer.exe is in C:\Windows

Have attached it in a folder.
Explorer.rar

Your next step before the weekend is to get an effective anti-virus up and running.

What were you running before ? Because it clearly didn't work aye....

On the AVG 7.0 Subject, AVG 8.0 is out and I think end of this month 7.0 version is being dis-continued?

Yup I know 8.0 is out but it is requring money to purchase it.

If it is out is there any other free virus protetion that is resonably good?

Cheers Harding :D And thanx for the heads up on that Shorty top man ;) _b

I use Anti-Vir

I also think it would be a great idea to download and use Ccleaner at least once a week as well.

You got a firewall Harding? Comodo and Zonealarm would be the two best freebies IMO

AVG 8.0 is still free, you just have to look a little harder than having it handed to you on a plate like 7.0 was.
Im using AVG 8.0 free and got it from AVG site. And no I am not talking about cracked or illegall software
