XP update and Zone Alarm

Post by Prometheus » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:20 pm

PC Pro UK Magazine are reporting the following for those, like me, who have XP, auto updates and Zone Alarm. Mind you , if you can read this thread, then you don't have a problem ! But if you hear of folks suddenly having no web access, it could be this.
A Microsoft update is causing problems for Zone Alarm users, causing a complete loss of internet access.

The KB951748 update is the offending piece of software, which alters files relating to Windows networking.

Zone Alarm reportedly interprets this as a malicious attack and completely blocks all internet traffic in response.

"For those of you using ZoneAlarm who installed the windows updates today, you probably already know that your internet connection has died," warns a user of the Broadband Reports forum.

. "It appears that KB951748 made changes to the networking files that ZA doesn't see/recognise."

You'd have to uninstall zone alarm I'd guess, or wait for the zone alarm patch which would no doubt be on the way rather shortly.
Or it might be possible to add the particular windows file to Zone alarms ignore list?

Not too sure I don't use Zone alarm, everyone I know that runs it ends up with endless issues :D

Trend Micro PC-Cillin, but I turn the firewall part off because I don't use it myself, but Happy does and it works pretty good.

i believe just setting the top slider in the firewall to medium instead of high fixes it.
Dont use ZA myself, but think this was what Heppy was describing to one of his customers today.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.

Yes, there are 2 options.

Reduce security settings to medium. Or click on the magazine article which has a details on how to remove the latest update to XP.
