**Loosing Connection**

Post by Rocketship » Mon Jun 15, 2009 10:52 pm

Hi guys,
i keep loosing connection when i am on the servers, (rFactor) and when im mucking around offline like on a program like gimp or stuff,
it has been doing this ever since i started racing online. :( , it went good on late models last night, for about half an hour before it lost connection.
Maybe a virus?
Or problem with my internet or connection?

Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers :)

To help, you need to post a lot more information.

How do you connect - via a router ? If so what brand/model/etc. What are your router stats and is there an error log of disconnects. What OS are you using. Who is your ISP.

Stuff like that.

Mind readers are few and far between :D

do you leave your router on all the time?

It sounds like it's over heating and dropping connection is a common accurance when they do Dynalink modems are fairly common for it specially if it's one of the standard ones you get from telecom so a suggestion if you do leave it on all the time try turning it off when your not on the pc so it gets some time to cool down and see if you continue to have the same issues.

Can you log into your router and post your line stats ?

You may have a dodgy phone line which can cause disconnections, it's especially noticeable after there has been rain.

Um im not 100% sure on this but open a internet page and in the address bar up to type in 10.1.1.1 and hit enter it should then open up a box asking for a username and password. if it does type in for the username admin and the password admin and that then should open up a box with your internt line speeds etc

As i said though im not 100% sure but im sure Prom can clear me up if im wrong.

If 10.1.1.1 doesn't give you a dynalink page, try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
login: "admin" password: "admin" is sadly very common, so definitely worth a shot.
If one of those works, then look for a status button.

Also, you might want to call xtra (0800-JETXTRA I think) and find out how far from the nearest exchange your house is. More than 4.5km and you can get a lot of drop-outs. I believe this is changing to more like 1km with DSL2.

Good luck :)

Oh and on another note, With my old ISP (Have just changed to Telstra Clear from Telecom) I also had a bad case of looseing connection while raceing or just browseing the Web. At first i thought it was my ISP, I rug them when it first started happening only for them to tell me that it's connected at their end.. they then told me it could my my actual Modem that is causing the fault. Sure enough that was my problem, since getting my new Dynalink Modem from Telstra Clear my Internet has not dropped once while i've been useing the internet (and that is with my modem running 24/7) In the 2 months that i have now been with Telstra

Sounds like you're on the outer limit of DSL.
I moved into a house that was 5km from the nearest exchange and Telecom assured me that it'd be fine, despite my concerns. My Router (Dynalink RTA300 at the time) could connect but would drop out after 5 seconds.
Telecom NZ tech support (some dude in India of course) promised me that everything was fine and it was definitely a problem with my house. So they sent a contractor round to check my house's lines, which took two weeks to happen. This is after I'd checked them myself and reported back saying that they were fine.
Their tech showed up with no line testing equipment at all other than a small "Telecom" branded DSL modem which he couldn't remember the login or password for haha.
After 3 hours of him messing with my router I got pissed off....went to work and grabbed 15 different routers.
Got home and shunted him away from my precious computer, and started plugging in one router after another. Eventually found one that could hold the connection. It was a Dlink 502T if I recall correctly.
The telecom contractor then told me that all 9 of the routers I'd tried previously had a fault hahaha.
I told him to piss off ;)

A few weeks later I got my phone bill which included 2 weeks of broadband that they hadn't been able to provide me with, AND 4 hours of tech time "for fixing my problem".
I sent them a letter saying that I wouldn't be paying for either, and I also included a bill for the hire of fifteen 4-port routers, and 2 hours of my time, on a 7 day charge account.
No one replied, but I noticed that my telecom account got credited with the tech time and two weeks of broadband :)

Morals of the story....

1. Before moving into a house, always check where the nearest exchange is. More than 4km....be concerned.
2. 95% of Telecom employees/contractors are utterly useless. No one I've spoken to has ever seen one of the remaining 5%.
3. Dlink modems may be crappy....but they're pretty handy with a weak signal.

Thats what i found with them, they told me everything was fine, as soon as i changed to this router/modem thing i now have, i have had no trouble.

thanks slobb, good read, its good to no that im not the only one that seems to have so much trouble with Telecom...
cheers
