HD4870

I recently aquired a HD4870 512mb graphics card.
I already have a HD4870 1gb and want to run these in crossfire.
Will my 1gb ram drop or is it only the GPU that drops (im assuming as they are both HD4870's that they will have the same GPU)

Good question pacman.....I also run crossfire sometimes when gaming but my two cards are identical.

I think you should be fine mate, have you tried :google: and asked the question about the HD4870, sometime's I've found answers there.....good luck.

Yeah i did have a look and got varied answers ranging from...
1. It should be ok as the second card does a seperate process and sends it to card 1.
2. It will drop the ram on the 1GB card down to 512MB to be compatible
3. It will drop both ram and GPU on the 1GB card to the levels on the 512MB card.

I am reasonably computer literate but this one seems to have me a bit stumped.
Admittedly im being a bit greedy having 2 cards but im trying to future proof my computer a little.
I hate when a game comes out and not being able to run it on full (call me fussy).

You can, it just scales back to the slowest card.
So the 1G scales back to 512MB.
So it will be like 2 512's I guess.

I understand where you are coming from too, the last few games I have been playing have been a little hard on my fps as I am more towards the minimum than the required specs.

i personally thnk if you allready have a 1 gig card why use xtra resources to run the second card ie ram and xtra psu wattage...
Id wait till i had 2 identical as using both wont really give you a great advatage at this stage as yea they will clok down to match waste ov a 1 gig card..

Just my opinion.... :D

P.s if for triple screening purposes then yup both you will need but dnt run in crossfire _b

I have realised tonight i will need a new psu.

Had my first computer shutdown (im assuming it did this to save itself) possibly due to to much drain on the psu, currently only and a 620 or 650 in there, might have to go to a 850 or a 1000 watter.

May sell on the 512 and try and get a matching 1gb, only problem being i want to get the exact same one and have had trouble finding it

On the mercy of those in the know...
How much is 1 of these cards?
Its in good condition, has the install disk, no manual and all associated cables (2 6 pin adapters and 1 crossfire cable)

For those who want stats and an image there it is.

This is not a sale hence why its not in for sales, just wanting to know a "fair" but good price.

I ran 2 HD4890s on a corsair vx 450 psu with no hassles so im assuing the shut dwn may nt have been psu related if you had both cards in it may have been a software conflict.....

Also no idea on the value of the card if it is a 256 bit 512ddr5 i may be keen on it for a back up....

If you look at that link above that is the exact image of the card so im assuming the stats will be identical also.
