Re: computer
Graphics card/video card are the same (if im wrong someone will correct me)
I think what you need to add is what you intend to use the computer for.
A good place to start would be look on the backs of all your games and make sure whatever you build will meet those requirements and then some.

Re: computer
Well heres the basic specs of my current PC which I run every game ive thrown at it so far fine (cod4, cod2, rfactor, race driver grid, battlefield bad company 2, team fortress 2, MW2) the list goes on and 90% of these games are mid gfx if not full graphics especially rFactor. also do photoshop n all on here.. Now i bought this off my mate for $800 (mates rates) but im sure if you look at similar if not slightly better components to what i have u wont spend much if anymore than $800
I'm running a...
Intel core2 duo E4500 processor @ 2.2ghz (oldish now days but still go hard)
2GB of DDR2 ram (as above)
Nvidia 9500GT Graphics card 1gb (overclocked to 1.7 if needed)
500w radimax power supply unit (came with my case)
Gigabyte GA-VM900M motherboard
500GB Western digital HDD just for space :P
and some dinky old sound card lol
*EDIT* Didn't notice you had said video making there so you could probably do with a better gfx card but still good cards for what they are

Re: computer
He will want 4850 or higher IMHO as the 4830 are very very entry level these days and wont future proof him for any new releases etc.

Re: computer
Always good advice at GPForums PC Build forum here:
http://www.gpforums.co.nz/forum/Modding ... ocking/?s=
In particular the "Default GP $500 - $2000+ PC Build Suggestions" thread. The forum uses NZ prices for products currently available from reputable stores like Computer Lounge etc.
Also on the same forum is a "The Official GP Guide On Building a PC" thread with pics to help you install stuff.
All depends on what your budget is.

Re: computer
Is your antivirus Malwarebytes? I had the same sort of thing happend to me with malwerebytes. Ended up being a file in the boot up programe(virus) that was 0KBs and windows cant boot up 0KBs (zero) so it was just shut'n'down @ desktop. I ended up piggybacking my harddrive on to another comp here (not recomended if your not computor savvy) removed the 0kb file and its worked fine after that.
Can you get into yr comp in SAFE MODE? Or last known settings that worked?

Re: computer
I've just been building my own computer lately (in it's final stages now).
Specs:
AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz 2mb Cache (Quad Core) - $183 (Including Postage)
Asus M4A78LT-M LE Motherboard - $99 (Including Postage)
4GB DDR3-1333GHz Gaming Ram - $147 (Including Postage)
SilverStone Coolmaster Case with perspex side - $85 (Including Postage)
That combined with a graphics card and power supply I already have will get me going.
If I was building a complete computer I would need to by a decent Power supply (so that it can handle further upgrades) around $150. Then I would invest the rest of whatever my budget is into a graphics card.
$514 dollars spent so far. Will be closer to $650 after I upgrade the power supply. Then will save up for an awesome graphics card that will hopefully last me a fair few years.
All in all, a gaming rig for under $1000. Will still be under if you add in extra's like pretty lights. a dozen fans and a couple of HDD's.
