Wireless Network help

Post by GarethRobinson » Fri May 05, 2006 1:27 pm

With VUW announcing their new student wireless network, I'd thought I'd get an wireless card for my main computer and link it up to my laptop via wireless, but I've been trying to get them connected for the last hour with no luck. Any common sticking points that can be fixed easily?

What have you tried so far?

I take it that the network is secured? Do they provide any details on how they've secured it (in terms of WEP/WPA/etc)

Obviously your card picks up the network, how strong is the signal?

A quick illustration of your network layout (PC, laptop, etc) would help too. :)

Clarification: The problem is with connecting the main computer with the laptop at home, nothing to do with the uni network.

If you are tring to connect 2 computers together without the aid of an Accesspoint, you need to change the cards setting from Infustructure Mode to AdHoc Mode. Manually select the same channel, and use the same SSID's, they should then find each other.

After that, enable MAC Filtering, should be secure enough.
