Wanting to buy laptop pc

Post by Snake Rogers » Fri Nov 17, 2006 5:32 pm

Hey guys,
I am looking at buying a lap top for personal use and for work.
Needs to be able to run turbo cad.

Who has the best reliable make?
How much would I need to spend?

I owned a Dell that I bought in UK till it got fried in lightning strike.
Dell's offered more, but their Call center is Aussie based over here, and their customer service not the best, plus nowhere to take it to complain, as they only sell online, or cheapies at Warehouse. They get someone local to service but ya get charged to get it picked up.

Toshiba, Acer or HP/Compaq all seem reasonable and come with mobile versions of Ati or Nvidia cards. Dunna how much you'd need to spend, but 2G should get ya something ya could game a bit with too.

If it's for Cad, see if there are any around with Nvidias Quadro cards in them (not sure if they make them for laptops tho) but those cards have stuff in them specifcaly for doing cad type work.

Other than that, just get a well known brand, find one u like and search on the internet for the name of that computer and put in keywords like "problems" "issues" etc to see if anyone else has had issues with the particular laptop u r looking at.

Those sags Typhewn and Hippy might have some ideas for u as they sell a few laptops.

I would like a big wide screen, but bigger the screen more money you pay. :)

From experence, the 2 best brands are Toshiba and Sony, and I doubt anyone here would disagree.

Many have good 2d/3d cards for Cad, what is most important is CPU and Memory. Core Duo, or Core2Duo, and a minimum of 1GB.

Stay well away from Retail models like Presario and Packard Bell.

A bonus with the Sony VAIO's are they come standard with Dual Layer DVD Writers and Adobe Premier if you want to do video editing and production as a side line. New models are just arriving, and they look very swish, and most include Nvidia Cards.

I have to agree with Typhoon, I'm now working in a storeroom at the biggest noel leeming store in Christchurch and get to check out all the stuff as it comes in. The VAIO notebooks seem to be always flying out the door as soon as the come in, I myself am looking at one for the partner so I can get mine back lol
