Post by Liquid » Tue Nov 21, 2006 7:24 am

Now that Vista has been released via MSDN (for those lucky to get this) and Shortly will be in retail, whos going Vista, and what verson.

Iam taking the dive and upgrading to Vista Ulitmate 64 tonight (will keep the old XP on just in case) Will be interesting to see how it goes. I bet that DX10 car will follow soon too.

So if you are on vista already , please post and tell us whats its like for gaming etc.

Looking forward to your review on Vista Liquid. We get the retail versions on Jan31st. Can you advise on what versions have been available over there? Since i've purchased a DX10 card I will look to upgrade pretty quickly.

I know someone using Vista RC1 and from what they found, the games performance dropped considerably (like in the range of 30 - 40% type thing),
not sure what the final release will go like ,but one can only find out by trying it out :)

I'll probably take the plunge when I finally upgrade my PC next year... I'll give it a while to settle down and see what sort of machine is REALLY needed to run my games on it properly (+ 2nd gen DX10 cards etc)

Yeah i also see they have a 32bit and a 64bit version. I thought they were trying to move ahead and Vista was going to be only 64bit.

RC2 was imposing a 10-20% performance hit on DX9 stuff - with biggest hit being seen on the 3dmarks.

Also DX10 drivers for Nvidia 8800s are still not here yet.

Both guys in my office running RC2 with FSX have reverted to XP... which ain't a glowing recommendation.

Ill be installing Vista Ultimate tonight on my second PC to see how the install goes, onec I know that ill set it up as a duel boot on my game PC. This will give me some idea on how it will play games with switching between both OS.
Ill let you know how it goes later this week.

lol, quite  ummm 120h x 450w ?

and back on topic...Will be making the switch once its relased, have been running the RC2 on my PC for a few weeks and havent really had any issues with it stability wise and going back to XP now feels like dragging my arse back to the stone age....yet to run games up properly but am going to reserve judgement there till I've got more mature drivers to have a play with (expect by the time us plebs get hold of Vista things would have been fine tuned a fair bit)

I will probably wait a couple of months from release, jumping into a new os the day of release is generally not the best idea, especially when it's from Microsoft.

Let others make the mistake and find the big bugs, then get it when the worst of them have been fixed :)

Well well I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my old Pc which is running these specs

AMD Duron 857 MHz
512 Ram
40 gig HD
Radeon 9200SE

Im very suprised at how well vista is running on startup with out changing any options around that would help it run better, the inital install picked up eveything ok on the PC and even set my desktop to my Dell 20" TFT highest res of 1600x1200 which is what I use for my desktop. So far im impressed for such a old machine running Vista

Lack of backwards compatibility, as very few things work on XP64bit
Even finding an compatible printer driver can be an issue, and forget about scanners etc..... Only a small amount of games work on 64bit, as it's really used on File Server and Internet Gateways

I'll be giving Vista 64bit a crack in the next week or so.

Getting the RTM 32 & 64bit bootable DVD atm.

Yes will be rather interesting, cause I think the 64bit bit version will cause all sorts of issues for some games. I'll stick with the 32bit bit version for compatibility. But, I'm in no great rush to try it as it's not like it makes things run any quicker until I partake in a DX10 Card
