Need advice with new graphics card

Post by Kahnage » Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:59 pm

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of browsing for a new graphics card, and I have been told that the 7900GT is a great card that does the job, looking on Pricespy and Trade Me the average price is $400. But I have come across a new 8600GT on Trade Me for only $268 (auction #105868091) this card sounds like it is better so why is it so cheap?

Cheers.

Anything to get to 2900 post ay ;p Difference is that the 8 series supports DX10 so I might just save up a bit more for a 8800GTS :)

Yes but by time there are any games that have DX10 and decent card drivers to utilise DX10 then the 8800 will be much cheaper and outdated by something new.

Right now DX10 compatibility is a waste of money. Get the best value for money card you can, and when the games and the drivers all work then you can upgrade.

Well taken, thanks for the advice, will get a 7900GT because you and rFactor.net recommends it.

LOL - There is much to know about the various types of cards and how they perform in different games, and I have always bought the second level card. Firstly because of price, secondly because it has been around long enough to prove it's performance in a variety of games, not just some benchmarks when it was fresh on the market.

Plus you need vista for dx10 aswell!

The mid range 8XXX series cards are pretty crappy, the 8800GTS is pretty damn grunty though.
