Power Saving
I have no idea if this is fact or not, you decide!
Once you go black you'll never go back........the Google way
When your screen is white - an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.
In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

Why does LCD consume more? I would have thought being liquid the power consumption would be the same, so it wouldn't matter if you were black or white.Noon416 wrote:The flaw in their plan is that LCD screens are the opposite (white screen = lowest power consumption), and with the growing number of LCD screens verses CRT, they'll start causing more power consumption than they're saving.

well apparently when the liquid between the panels in an LCD screen is fully twisted or something arather, then the polarisation makes it appear black and to get the liquid molecules fully twisted it requires the maximum voltage for a particular pixel. There's something about it on Wikipedia but basicaly more or less voltage changes how much the liquid crystal molecules are twisted giving a different brightness/colour.

What Bazzil said...but in plain English so it makes sense...Typhoon wrote:So you mean "what Bazzil said" :PSkuzzlebutt wrote:Very simply...
LCD's use a backlight to create light...this is always on. When an LCD has to display "black" it has to physically manipulate the liquid crystals (by shooting more electricity through them) to stop that light from being seen.
