XP restarting
I have an issue with XP that when I shut down it restarts itself.
I have unticked the "restart automatically if there is a problem etc..." but it still restarts.
What can I do to see what is causing it?

When it shut down before it has a chance to restart back up, turn it off at the wall for a few minutes then switch it back on, had this problems a while back I did this and it worked for me, if it starts back up when you switch it back on take the power button out and make sure it isn't making it stuck on or anything like that , if it still happens after you turn it on after that I would consider taking it into the professionals

Corrupt sound drivers or sounds on start/shutdown could be your first stop seeing you put a soundcard in recently????

Yeah...I tried everything with no luck.
The only thing I changed was to install a sound card. I had uninstalled the drivers etc but still had issues. I finally took the card out and found a sound mixer exe program. I tried to uninstall it but it said that no soundcard was installed. I deleted it and XP then shut down as per normal. The only issue now is that it says it has found new hardware...yet nothing has been installed!!

OK..I have found the problem - I installed a cheap sound card as the mobo doesn't have onboard sound.
I thought it was the drivers etc that were causing the issues but it was the actual sound card. Once I took it back out the machine worked fine. I swapped the sound card for a different type but of the same brand and had the problem come back.
I haven't installed any software what so ever. It's the card in the slot that is causing the issues. I have tried both slots and the same thing happens.
Any ideas on this?

Yep. Regretfully if the card is the cause of the issue, you need a higher quality one.Growler wrote:OK..I have found the problem - cheap sound card
Or.
Can you put something else into the PCI slot to make sure it's not the motherboard slightly going nuts with something plugged in, into that slot ?
Crazier things have happened.
