64bit - still a bit of a fizzer that one. 16bit to 32bit went alot smoother.
Vista 32bit - running it, only got it for DX10 stuff and because I was building a new PC.
XP - dual booting this as Vista thinks the graphics card has crashed, when it hasn't, while running rFactor.
My pick is Vista, with a dual boot of XP for gaming, or just XP.
Thats my completely uninformed opinion.

Re: XP, Vista or Vista 64bit
I'm running Vista 64bit, no problems so far, got drivers for all my hardware etc, and the games I have tried so far have no problems..
I haven't tried a lot of old games yet, or new games for that matter.. Only been running it for a week so far
I'd say for the future, and especially if you have 4Gig+ of ram then go Vista 64, but it might be a good idea to have an XP dual boot for a wee while yet.

If you have more than 3.5GB of ram XP 32bit will cause weird errors, XP 64bit will be Ok though.

There is a way to make vista 32 bit see the full 4 gigs, you have to edit some file - not sure on the details but google will know

Re: XP, Vista or Vista 64bit
I have been running XP 64bit for about 3 weeks now with no issues. The only game that I know of so far that had to self install a 64bit version is Crysis but it did it all automatically and runs fine.
I have since heard about this hack to make windows(32) recognise 4gig of ram but the question is, does it just recognise it but can't utilise it like 64bit does?

Re: XP, Vista or Vista 64bit
While we are on the subjuct of this, how can you tell if you are running 32bit or 64bit in XP?
What are the benefits of going to 64bit?
I have 4Gb memory but as stated it only recognises 3.5Gb...but I have had no issues with it to date.

Goto system properties (windows key + pause) and it will tell you. If it just says 'Windows XP' you will only have 32. It is very unlikely that you will have 64bit.Growler wrote:While we are on the subjuct of this, how can you tell if you are running 32bit or 64bit in XP?

You wont have any issues with having more ram, it just wont get used.
The only real benefit is that it can address more memory, and the odd program which is written for it may run 'slightly' better. The only 64bit game I know of is Far Cry / Crysis.
