FEAR Extraction Point - review scores

Post by Typhoon » Tue Oct 31, 2006 2:37 pm

- PC Gamer: 8.6 out of 10 (not yet published)

- Game Informer: 8 out of 10

o Extraction Point definitely delivers, as the shooting mechanic is as indulgent and satisfying as ever.

- Games Radar: 8 out of 10

o “This is still a worthwhile expedition - the atmosphere is still frighteningly tense and surreal, and the enemy AI is still fierce and smart, making gun-battles unparalleled with cinematic fervor.”

o “Your bullets mercilessly pound enemy-flesh, severing torsos, heads, arms and legs, the stray shells wreak equal demolition to your surroundings, crafting a visual symphony.”

- Game Zone: 8 out of 10

o “F.E.A.R. was and still is one of the best looking games on the PC.”

o “F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is a fun and visceral experience in league with the original game.”

Is this an expansion to the original (ie: need original game) or can it be bought as a stand-alone game?

From what I've read it's more combat focussed - i.e. more bad guys at once, less story (i.e. hardly any), the same 'scares' and it's short.

You need FEAR to play addon (not stand alone)

Agent pretty much summed up what i have read on the web. I was looking forward to this but know i think i will wait until its in budget bin. Plus no MP as its in the FEAR combat which is free.

The basic recommendation seems to be "If you loved the combat in FEAR and want more bigger battles in a short addon then this is for you".

Frankly after a few scares the combat was the big ticket item and main redeeming feature of FEAR. Hell I liked the combat big-time. So more is good. The question is, with free multi as Liquid says, is it enough?

And it seems to run very poorly. people that have had FEAR running in max or high settings and had smooth frames report XP is very laggy. Looks like people the made it didnt do a very good compared to the great Monolith.

I believe it was Timegate - authors of a couple of great strategy games called Kohan. Bit new to FPS titles methinks.

Any word on whether this fixes the incredibly lame level design from the original?

I loved (some of) the combat, the story was "ok" but man the levels really were terrible.

I have read that the Story is worse and the Levels are worse. Pretty much stay away or wait till budget bin.
