AGP Owners Rejoice

Post by Mattly » Thu Nov 02, 2006 1:19 pm

Hi again Guys.

ATi have decided there is still a market for AGP slot videocards and are releasing the fastest AGp card yet. It's due late in November, but I have gleaned some specs anyway. No reviews yet that i can find, however the experts believe it will be as fast as a X1800XT approx.

Gecube have an AGP X1950 Pro listed at OCUK for pre-order. It should be available end of November. It has the same specification as the PCI-e version, but just to refresh your memory:

- ATI Radeon X1950 PRO - 575MHz (RV570 80nm)
- 256MB GDDR3 memory - 1.38GHz
- 36 Pixel shader processor
- Ultra-threaded SM 3.0 Engine
- 512-bit Ring-bus
- HDCP Ready
- Low power consumption (Consumes 60W less than equivalent X1900 XT)

There is nothing on AGP to match this sort of power other than Gainwards 7800+ (which is really a 7900 GT in disguise with slightly lower clocks). This X1950 Pro AGP card should make a lot of AGP owners seriously happy, i'm sure.

The 1950pro is roughly the same speed as the 7900GT's (but for less - they are just over $400 in pci-e trim)

Question I have to ask though... is how many people have a system (using agp) that is fast enough to keep up with the card?
Perhaps higher end socket 754 A64?

Yeah, that's me. But I'm at the end of my upgrade cycle, so I think the card is aimed at people who still use onboard video or similar and want to buy a better card.

Me I went Ti4200, then 6600GT, now the X800 something . And that'll be it.

Looks like the performance is about the same as the 7900GT. It some games it's even slightly better. Price in NZ will be around $450 I think.
