New Need For Speed

Post by Jetboy » Tue Apr 12, 2005 1:57 am

April 11, 2005 - In an announcement made early this morning, Electronic Arts confirmed that its gigantic Canadian development team is currently working on a brand new racer for just about every system imaginable. Dubbed Need for Speed Most Wanted, the new speester is the follow-up to last year's Need for Speed Underground 2 and will combine the tuner customization of the previous title with an expanded take on the police chases of 2002's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.

"Outrace your opponents, evade cops, and exploit the open world in Need for Speed Most Wanted; street racing doesn't get any better than this," said Larry LaPierre, senior producer, EA Canada. "Players instantly will feel the thrill of the ride as they hit the streets in an open world environment where drivers can tune their cars to compete against any class of vehicles or use their wits to out-fox the law to satisfy their need for speed."

Though specific details about the game are still a mystery, it's been confirmed that Most Wanted will feature a Rap Sheet option that works hand in hand with a player's street reputation as they move up from the "Black List" to the A-List. Users will also be able to go head-to-head with their opponents while simultaneously trying to avoid more than six different police cars at once through a dynamically changing open-ended world. An interesting aside to this is that police chases themselves are said to be more strategic than they were before. But whether or not this strategy applies to stage design, the AI, or a combination of both, is still nothing more than speculation.

To keep Need for Speed Underground fans happy, Most Wanted will also feature the popular customization functionality of the previous game -- though the extent of just how many modifications can be made hasn't really been clarified yet. EA did go on record by stating, however, that tuners, supercars, muscle cars, and sports cars will be incorporated.

As stated earlier, Need for Speed Most Wanted is slated to come out on every system imaginable, with SKUs planned for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Windows PC, and Sony PSP. There's even a next-generation version underway that we can only assume is for Microsoft's expected Xbox follow-up.
