Post by Sennheiserl » Wed Oct 14, 2009 5:39 pm

Hey all i was just wondering if there was a way to boardcast the race on the net without having to use a web cam. i have a web cam and have showed a race live before but the cam was getting in my view of the screen. if anyone has any ideas or knows if this can be done could you reply.

Cheers Senn

We looked at this about a year ago for a NZ v Oz race, using a webcam pointed at the small right hand side live screen in the race, and using the mouse to select the different cars in the race. We chose that way rather than have the rFactor machine running the game full screen. But with practise I was able to get some coverage together that would look similar to live tv coverage, including hot cutting to in car cams, etc.

But.

Ended up using a laptop for the web cam to do the encoding to reduce the load on the rFactor pc, but the upload speed was just too slow to make it viable. Streaming media on a server and your web connection uses a bit of resources, esp if you're expecting quite a few viewers.

Gave up in the end as it didn't live to expectations / what was really wanted. There are web sites out there that allow you to host streaming video (sorry can't remember any names atm) but expect a heavy hit on your bandwidth useage.

Prom, for special events I can arrange a re-broadcasting server.

So you only upload to 1 viewer essentially, being the server. Other public viewers connect to the server and use its bandwidth instead.

open your eyes turn your monitor on its side (rotate anti-clockwise) and pretend there's no gap between the < and the 3

Yup, apologies I should've added to my lengthy post that Inspire had very kindly offered to cover the re-broadcasting of the event.
