Also a huge congrats to Bafana Bafana for there 2 - 1 win over a helpless France side who shouldn't have been at the world cup had they not produced "the hand of frog" against the Irish. I can tell you now that Irish eyes are smiling thanks to the hosts!!

Yeppers, John is correct. Friday morning it is for the big showdown with Paraguay.

Results I hadn't got around to posting:

Group G:
Portugal 7 - 0 North Korea

Group H:
Chile 1 - 0 Switzerland
Spain 2 - 0 Honduras

Group A:
Mexico 0 - 1 Uruguay
France 1 - 2 South Africa

Group B:
Nigeria 2 - 2 South Korea
Greece 0 - 2 Argentina

So South Africa, France, Greece and Nigeria have all been played their last game of the World Cup. Uruguay topped Group A so will face South Korea in the first quarter final while Group B winners, Argentina take on Mexico.

MP pushes for public holiday for All Whites' win
NZ Herald wrote:A Labour Party MP is pushing to make Friday a public holiday if the All Whites get an historic World Cup victory.

New Zealand play Paraguay on 2am Friday, with a win putting them through to the World Cup's final 16 for the first time ever.

MP Trevor Mallard today posted on the party's blog, Red Alert, a draft of a Bill that would make Friday a holiday if the All Whites won their match.

"Because New Zealand deserves a public holiday if the All Whites win against Paraguay on Friday morning. This would be a far far better result from pool play than any we have had before. And if Bob Hawke could declare a de facto holiday when Australia won the Americas Cup, then we can do better," the Bill says in its "explanatory note".

It was now up to the Government whether to let the Bill be read in Parliament tomorrow, Mr Mallard said.

"It depends entirely on the Government. The Government can block it very easily ... [but] I'm serious about giving it a go."

Article continues below

But some comments on Labour's blog cautioned that anticipating the outcome of Friday's match by suggesting it be a holiday would "jinx" it.

"They have to win first, don't jinx it Trevor," wrote waterboy.

Mr Mallard said the All Whites would know all of New Zealand was right behind them and this would not affect them.

"Getting through that stage is going to be very close to being the biggest achievement that we've done, at a sporting event on that massive scale," he said.

"It's beyond most of our dreams."

Earlier this week, after watching the All Whites' 1-1 draw against Italy in South Africa, Prime Minister John Key was asked whether the achievement warranted a public holiday.

"Damn fine idea. I want the country to enjoy this. They'll be dancing all over the place," Mr Key told media.

Group C:
Slovenia 0 - 1 England
USA 1 - 0 Algeria

Group D:
Ghana 0 - 1 Germany
Australia 2 - 1 Serbia

A last minute goal to Donovan put USA top of Group C, leaving England to face Germany in the round of 16. Australia beating Serbia meant that Ghana went through second in Group D to take on USA.

The group F table going into the games tonight/tomorrow morning (played simultaneously at 2am):

Code: Select all

Team MP	W	D	L	GF GA Pts
Paraguay 2	1	1	0	3	1	4
Italy 2	0	2	0	2	2	2
New Zealand 2	0	2	0	2	2	2
Slovakia 2	0	1	1	1	3	1
Simple equation: if we win, we go through to the knockout round.
Complicated equation: if we draw, Italy and Slovakia must draw at a score equal to or less than the NZ vs Paraguay game. If it's equal, it comes down to a toss of a coin over us or Italy qualifying.

TAB Odds:
Paraguay $1.45
Draw $4.00
New Zealand $7.00

Another identical starting lineup for Ricki Herbert:

Code: Select all

                        Mark Paston

Winston Reid Ryan Nelson Tommy Smith

Leo Bertos Ivan Vicelich Simon Elliot Tony Lochhead

Shane Smeltz Rory Fallon Chris Killen
Coverage is on both TV1 and SS2 tomorrow morning. Tune in from 1.30am to either station with the kick-off at 2.00am (teams come out and national anthems at 10 to).

C'mon the All Whites!!!!!

And the Paraguay starting lineup (if anyone actually cares, lol):
Villar (c), Morel, Bonet, Santa Cruz, Vera, Da Silva, Victor Caceres, Riveros, Haedo-Valdez, Barrios, Alcaraz

Only player anyone might have heard of is Roque Santa Cruz who used to play for Blackburn, now Manchester City.

Game finished 0-0. One hiccup to the masterplan was the fact that Slovakia beat Italy 3-2. This meant Paraguay topped the group with 5pts, Slovakia second with 4pts, us in third on 3pts and Italy in last place with 2pts.

Undefeated at the world cup is a great achievement and I'm not disappointed in the slightest. We were expected to record 3 losses and be the whipping boys of the tournament, yet we ended up with three draws against top opponents and a reputation on the world stage.

It means the All Whites can come home and start contract negotiations :larf:

I gotta say last night I was disappointed we didnt get the win or make the next round and I still am really but what an achievement the guys have done absolutely amazing. Unbeaten through out the World Cup astonishing who would have guessed. Plus to finish above Italy HA!!!! that will teach them for being pansies and flopping around more than a fish out of water. Mark Paston and Ryan Nelson were huge for the team without those two the results wouldnt be possible. Hopefully we can make the next World Cup and achieve more.

The round of 16 matches start tonight/tomorrow morning with:

Yeah that will be a good game, as will Brazil vs Chile. But both Mexico and Chile aren't top 10 ranked teams so I didn't class them as 'big' games.

And your prediction won't happen. Argentina are on the same side of the draw as Spain and Portugal.

Either Uruguay, South Korea, USA or Ghana are getting to the semi, so the winner of Brazil vs Netherlands will likely reach the final.

On the other side of the draw, the winner of Argentina vs Germany (already predicting England will lose) will face off with whoever wins out of Portugal and Spain (Paraguay and Japan won't offer much threat in the quarters).

In this round of 16, there's 6 European, 5 South American, 2 Central American, 2 Asia and 1 African team so it's spread over the globe somewhat.

Uruguay 2 - 1 South Korea

Uruguay now face Ghana in the first quarter final.

Nike realised they screwed up with using Ronaldinho in their ad, so have released a special 'Robinho's Future' advert:

Seems to be a combination of Ronaldinho's and Cristiano Ronaldo's though. :o
