No All Whites Thread Yet?
We aren't all on the bandwagon yet? Well now's the time to jump aboard before it set off to game one of the World Cup (played in South Africa if you're still living in a hole).
The All Whites build up draw:
vs Mexico (3 Mar): 2-0 loss
vs Australia (24 May): 2-1 loss
vs Serbia (29 May): 1-0 win
vs Slovenia: 3-1 loss
vs Chile: 2-0 loss
The All Whites World Cup draw for Group F (and Sky Sport channels and times):
vs Slovakia (Tues 15th, SS2 @ 11.00pm)
vs Italy (Mon 21st, SS2 @ 1.30am)
vs Paraguay (Fri 25th, SS2 @ 1.30am)
The top two teams after the group stage move onto the knockout round where, if the All Whites make it through, could face the likes of Netherlands, Cameroon, Denmark or Japan.
The squad of 23 that Ricki Herbert has selected to take to South Africa:
GK James Bannatyne (Team Wellington)
GK Glen Moss (Melbourne Victory, Australia)
GK Mark Paston (Wellington Phoenix)
DF Andrew Boyens (New York Red Bulls, United States)
DF Tony Lochhead (Wellington Phoenix)
DF Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn Rovers, England)
DF Winston Reid (FC Midtjylland, Denmark)
DF Ben Sigmund (Wellington Phoenix)
DF Tommy Smith (Ipswich Town, England)
DF Ivan Vicelich (Auckland City)
MF Andy Barron (Team Wellington)
MF Leo Bertos (Wellington Phoenix)
MF Jeremy Brockie (Newcastle Jets, Australia)
MF Tim Brown (Wellington Phoenix)
MF Simon Elliott (Unattached)
MF Michael McGlinchey (Motherwell, Scotland)
MF Jeremy Christie (Tampa Bay Rowdies, United States)
MF David Mulligan (Unattached)
MF Aaron Clapham (Canterbury United)
FW Rory Fallon (Plymouth Argyle, England)
FW Chris Killen (Middlesbrough, England)
FW Shane Smeltz (Gold Coast United, Australia)
FW Chris Wood (West Bromich Albion, England)
Feel free to any All Whites <3 to the thread as it could be another 28 years before we make another World Cup.
If you aren't already excited about the World Cup or haven't seen Nike's ad (which goes down as the best Nike ad ever made), watch it below:

Am I the only one that thinks that Nike ad is boring as hell? I don't see what the fuss is with it.
Anyway I don't usually follow the soccer but will be following and supporting the All Whites throughout their campaign.

Football, soccer. Same difference.Bull wrote:Isn't it called Football now Aaza?
Since the last World Cup was all the Joga Bonito crap led by Erik Cantona which was a epic snooze fest added to some Ronaldinho juggles and turns as well as Ronaldo ass kissing (the OG Brazil one), this one is a massive step up and will actually be remembered come 2014.blenderer wrote:Am I the only one that thinks that Nike ad is boring as hell? Ricki Herbert's gone with the same starting 11 that bet Serbia last weekend for the match tomorrow morning against Slovenia. Chris Killen had originally replaced Chris Wood but has been ruled out with a calf strain.
Starting 11 (sticking with the 3-4-3):
TAB Odds:
Slovenia $1.40
Draw $4.00
All Whites $8.00
Starting 11 (sticking with the 3-4-3):
Code: Select all
Mark Paston
Winston Reid Ryan Nelson Tommy Smith
Leo Bertos Jeremy Christie Simon Elliot Tony Lochhead
Shane Smeltz Rory Fallon Chris Wood
Slovenia $1.40
Draw $4.00
All Whites $8.00

Slovenia 3 - 1 New Zealand. Goalscorers were Milivoje Novakovic (2), Rory Fallon and Andraz Kirm.
I personally think a loss was the best result for New Zealand. I say that because after the Serbia game, just about everyone in NZ was saying that this was the greatest ever All Whites win, best performance ever by the team, etc. when we played a second string Serbian team that were only worried about fitness. Plus this game was played in Slovenia (at their pathetic 12,000 capacity stadium) where Slovenia had gone the whole of the World Cup qualifying campaign undefeated with their fans ready to see them off to South Africa.
Things we can take out the game is:

Things we can take out the game is:
- Our one style of play has been discovered and now will not work at the World Cup. We need a new tactic and bombing Lochhead forward on the left is not the answer.
- If we give away a freekick against Paraguay we are screwed. Oscar Cardozo taking a freekick is like the combination of David Beckham curl with Roberto Carlos power and we conceded twice against a semi-decent taker today. Italy also have Pirlo but he's past it now and maybe out the World Cup.
- Milivoje Novakovic had to resort to swimming lessons in order to put his team ahead. Up until that time, the team were doing well and had come back from 1-0 down. Come World Cup time when the Italian's go for movie contracts, the referee will pick up on the diving so it shouldn't be as blatant (or
- Mark Paston had his loss of concentration before the World Cup started. From now on, he'll have his concentration the whole 90 minutes so I'm pleased it happened today.

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
And big, big news has come out of South Africa today:
Rio Ferdinand is out of the World Cup with a knee ligament injury. That's the England captain goneskis.
Didier Drogba has only just broken his arm but his Ivory Coast team refuse to rule him out the World Cup.
So England have a excuse for when they get knocked out and the Ivory Coast now have no chance to qualify out of the group of death (Group G).

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
Right, so for those of you living in a hole, the World Cup began yesterday morning and since then games have been played.
Group A:
South Africa 1 - 1 Mexico
France 0 - 0 Uruguay
Group B:
Korea Republic 2 - 0 Greece
Argentina 1 - 0 Nigeria
Group C:
England 1 - 1 United States
New Zealand play Tuesday night at 11.00pm against Slovakia but won't have Tim Brown for this game. However, his recovery from shoulder surgery will mean he should be able to play in the second game against Italy.
Each country seems to go with a World Cup anthem for their team and most of you will know that The Feelers are cashing in on the World Cup fever. The All Whites' anthem is a cover of Stand Up by Stan Walker (that's utterly atrocious, much like The Feelers themselves), but the Red Seas Buoys decided to do a anthem for the team titled "Todos Los Blancos (All Whites)". If you didn't see it on The Jono Project, you can watch it here and also download it for free on the C4 website.
England decided to go all out at making a crap song for their team this time round and recruited Dizzee Rascal and James Corden to murder the song "Shout". If you can think you can stand it, watch it.

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
More results from last night/this morning:
Group C:
Algeria 0 - 1 Slovenia
Group D:
Serbia 0 - 1 Ghana
Germany 4 - 0 Australia
Seeing Australia being thrashed by Germany was a great watch this morning. And to top it of, Tim Cahill got sent off and will miss the match against Ghana (and maybe Serbia too depending on a one or two match ban).

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
Its not at all about that Ford. We arent going to win the Rugby World Cup, whats your point? Or Hockey, Basketball, Netball, Cricket etc etc.
Having a team qualify for one of the - if not the biggest sporting event in the world is a great achievement by itself. Not only does it get a bit of airtime, but young-ins will start taking more notice/interest in soccer, meaning higher participation numbers, more people playing, which will mean in the future our team will get stronger.
Thats why our Current All Blacks team is in such a predicament atm. Back in the day it was every boys dream to be an All Black. Nowadays its not. We were at the top of the game and it didn't inspire improvement, higher participation etc which is why atm we have almost no depth and possibly one of the weakest AB Sides in NZ Rugby History ...

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
my point being nz is useless, plain and simple.you talk about sport in the old days the 1990s aint the old days, sport was a game of enjoyment in my old days, then some nob decided to pay these guys money to play, what happened,1,we lost many a player overseas and then all our good coaches left as well, why pay mega dollars to guys who if it wasent for the money, they wouldnt play, look what money dose to our so called sportsman,,sonny bill comes to mind, the only way to get our country up with the rest is do what they all do,put the money in jnr sport and not senior sport, after all its the young ones that could win ,not the hazbeens we pay now,my veiw only ,

Re: No All Whites Thread Yet?
Other then that I do agree with you Ford. Players don't play for the sake of representing NZ anymore - its all about the $$$
Thats why this World Cup and the All whites is such a big thing for New Zealand - They are playing on a very small budget compared to the likes of Rugby, and they are playing because it is what they love to do, they are playing for the Pride of the nation. It means a lot to the youths and younger soccer players who have something to inspire to, to look up to.
