BREAKING NEWS: A tornado has cut a path of devastation through Auckland this afternoon, killing one person and injuring at least 22.
North Shore Hospital spokesman Paul Patton confirmed one person had died in the terrifying tornado which had winds averaging 200km/h, forecasters says. There are unconfirmed reports of a second death.
The tornado touched down at around 3pm in Albany on Auckland's North Shore and then moved south to Birkenhead, briefly touching down again in the Waitemata Harbour, before heading west to Pt Chevalier.
It lifted roofs, uplifted trees and left a 5km trail of debris.
Patton said 20 injured were due to arrive at the hospital with another two being sent to Auckland Hospital.
Emergency services reported a tree smashed through a house, at least one vehicle was overturned and roofs damaged around Glenfield.
A truck also jackknifed in Rosedale. Kaipatiki Rd is also closed for at least four hours due to damage.
Police are advising people to stay indoors and limit travel until the weather settles.
"We encourage people to return home, contact family if necessary. Leave roads near Albany commercial area free for Emergency services," a police spokesperson said.
A North Shore police spokesman said emergency services were busy fielding calls from the public with reports of damage to homes and cars.
Early reports are that part of the Albany Megacentre roof has collapsed and cars in the shopping mall carpark have been tossed aside.

Re: Tornado hits Auckland
I'm fine, was on the other side of the bridge in the city when it happened. I live in Albany so it was pretty scary stuff hearing about it but house and family are fine as we weren't in the path but it came pretty close to Dad's work.
Some of the footage is pretty amazing especially seeing the damage to the cars in the mega centre carpark and the roof of the Westfield mall.
